GENERAL INTRO AND BENEFITS
Equine assisted activities and therapies are designed for individuals with varying degrees of physical, emotional, cognitive and social abilities or special needs. Equine assisted activities and therapies are generally separated into two categories:
EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY:
Activities in which a licensed therapist employs aspects of the horse (its movement, personality, symbolism, etc) as a means to attaining specific therapeutic goals (hippotherapy and equine facilitated psychotherapy are examples).
EQUINE ASSISTED ACTIVITY:
Equine focused recreational and educational activities, led by nationally certified instructors, in which the overall experience leads to tangible therapeutic results (therapeutic riding, driving and vaulting are examples.)

WHAT ABOUT RIDING THE HORSE, INTERACTING WITH THE HORSE, OR VISITING THE FARM, LEADS TO THERAPEUTIC BENEFIT?
The three dimensional stride of the horse is so similar to the human gait that riding has a proven therapeutic effect, especially for individuals with ambulatory or neurological challenges.
- Horses don't judge; they are present and willing.
- The immensity of the horse, though each one is trained to be unflappably safe, presents real life circumstances that necessitate facing intimidating situations.
- A student on a horse often sits above the eye level of those around him/her, creating a perspective they may not otherwise experience, especially from a wheelchair or as a victim of abuse.
- Principles of inclusion and non-discrimination are valued at Horse Power, which is emphasized when considering the varying breeds, ages, strengths and limitations of each of our animals.
